What will happen on 10-10-10?

I'm not all about finding auspicious dates for things. Ethan and I got married on 7-7-07 because we wanted a weekend in early July more than because of the cool date. Dorie was born on 8-8-08 because my mother prayed that such would be the case and, let me tell you, I wasn't happy with her prayer at 11:30pm on 8-7-08! Now Dorie has taken matters into her own hands and arranged things so I will never forget when she took her first steps--9-9-09!
Silly Girl.

Yippie Skippie! We are On the Nest--again!

I had such good intentions of keeping this a secret until August 8. Dorie's birthday is only three weeks away but I have been forced to admit that I can't wait any longer to announce that I'm pregnant. My little one has been around for only three months, I'm only a pound heavier, but already he/she is pushing my belly out pretty far.
Once again, I love being pregnant. I can't wait to feel this baby move. I'm healthy and I don't feel sick (though to stay that way I have to eat frequently!...which makes this foodie happy, of course :) I feel like the luckiest girl alive.

Dorie's Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day

Alexanders bad day

We put Dorie to bed five minutes ago and in baby language she is telling us that she had a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day. Of course, we already knew this, but we also know that (contrary to her opinion) we are not making her day worse by forcing her go to sleep.

Not all of Dorie's day was miserable. She smiled wide when I swang with her on her great-grandma's swing. She discovered a new favorite beverage (homemade hot chocolate) and she said her first word. Our daughter exudes friendliness so I am not surprised that "hi" happens to be this word.  Even with these bright spots, the fact that she is still complaining in her crib reminds me of the saddness in her day.

This morning started wrong when she took a tumble and bumped her nose on the floor. The memory of this must have stayed with her for the rest of the day because something as minor as losing her balance would bring tears. While Ethan played piano with her on his lap, she gently slid off and then bumped her nose agian on the piano. More tears occured--understandably. Then, while she was eating, she decided to drop some of her pancake on the floor, and Ethan and I decided that today would be the day to beginning training her not to do such a thing. When I crinkled my brow and said a stern "no" I just broke my little girl's heart. She didn't drop anymore food on the floor but she did give a little sob. She soon cheered up, but when Ethan later looked at her and accidentaly hiccuped she started crying agian. Dorie is such a sensitive little thing.

Well, I just checked on her and the sound of quiet breathing is coming from her room. May my little person have a happier Tuesday than this sad Monday. Goodnight Dorothea Rose; I love you.

Watermelon Head

Dorie has eaten so much watermelon today that I'm sure she will overflow her diaper tonight. Here is a picture of her beside our ping-pong table. Dorie loves to crawl underfoot while we play--which interrupts our game terribly. Ethan and I gave her a plate of watermelon so that we could play two games. I won, by the way :).

We have had some wonderful guests at our home this week. My best friend, Liz Washburn, is getting married on Saturday and she is spending two nights with us. Last night my cousin David, his girlfriend Roxie, Jerrel and Sarah Heatwole, their baby and my grandma came for supper. We had such a great time--Ethan made homemade french bread and I made Potato-Corn-Ham Chowder and Sarah made a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cake.   Tonight my folks came for supper--good food, good times! I love company so much.

Finding Joy

Two or three days ago I stopped by my parent's place. My mom shares a similarity with Pippi Longstocking--she is a "thing-finder." Salvation Army has surrendered a number of green glassware to her finding abilties. When I walked into her living room the afternoon sun was making her collection glow like green fire.

Inspired, I dusted off my watercolors and painted this:

All this reminds me of one of my favorite poems.

I Have Found Such Joy
by Grace Noll Crowell

I have found such joy in simple things;
A plain, clean room, a nut-brown loaf of bread,
A cup of milk, a kettle as it sings,
The shelter of a roof above my head,
And in a leaf-laced square along the floor,
Where yellow sunlight glimmers through the door.
I have found such joy in things that fill
My quiet days: a curtain's blowing grace,
A potted plant upon my window sill,
A rose, fresh-cut and placed within a vase;
A table cleared, a lamp beside a chair,
And books I long have loved beside me there.
Oh, I have found such joys I wish I might
Tell every woman who goes seeking far
For some elusive, feverish delight,
That very close to home the great joys are:
The elemental things- old as the race,
Yet never, through the ages, commonplace.

So, what simple things do you love? Here are three of mine--let me know yours!
1.) My daughter's belly chuckle.
2.) The  smell of sunscreen.
3.) Clean, wet laundry blowing on a clothesline
